All Eyes on the Line: Theatre Group Asia Brings A Chorus Line to the Philippines
There’s a certain electricity in the air when an audition begins. The squeak of shoes against the studio floor, the nervous hum of singers warming up in the hallway, and the unspoken hope that today—just maybe—will be the day. That’s the heartbeat of A Chorus Line, and now, fifty years after the legendary musical first shook Broadway, that same heartbeat is echoing here in the Philippines.
This year, Theatre Group Asia (TGA), in collaboration with Ayala Land, Ayala Malls, and Seda, is throwing the doors wide open for a nationwide casting call—inviting Filipino performers to step into the spotlight for an all-local production of A Chorus Line.

A Story That Mirrors Reality
Directed and choreographed by Emmy Award-winner Karla Puno Garcia, the casting process itself will feel like a scene lifted directly from the show. Much like the musical’s 17 dancers baring their souls for a shot at the chorus, auditionees will be asked to do the same—sing, dance, and tell their stories, unfiltered and unguarded.
“I’ve lived this story,” Garcia says, reflecting on her own journey from hopeful dancer to Broadway powerhouse. “I know what it’s like to want so badly to be seen. Now, I want to offer that moment of visibility to Filipino performers—raw, vulnerable, and unforgettable.”
A Golden Anniversary, A Filipino Stage
Half a century since its 1975 debut, A Chorus Line remains a theatrical touchstone: no elaborate set, no dazzling costume changes—just pure human ambition on stage. It’s a musical that broke molds, celebrated individuality, and dared to show the unseen heroes of theater: the ensemble dancers.
And now, it’s our turn. For the first time, A Chorus Line will be told by an all-Filipino cast. It’s a historic stage where local artistry collides with Broadway tradition, proof that Filipino talent can stand shoulder to shoulder with the world’s best.
The Hunt for Stars of the Ensemble
Auditions are open to performers of Filipino heritage, aged 18 and above—dancers, singers, and actors of all gender identities. Whether in Manila, Cebu, Bacolod, or Davao, hopefuls will line up, bring their headshots, and step onto that bare stage with nothing but their talent and grit.
What’s required? Strong dance foundations, the ability to sing and act, and most importantly—the courage to show who you are. Because in A Chorus Line, the dancers aren’t just characters; they’re people with dreams, flaws, and fire.
Online submissions are welcome, but those who show up in person will take center priority. As Garcia reminds: “We want to see you—the energy, the instincts, the presence you can only feel in the room.”
A Global Legacy, A Filipino Future
Since its debut, A Chorus Line has swept awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and nine Tony Awards. Its songs—What I Did for Love, I Hope I Get It, The Music and the Mirror—still ring out as anthems for dreamers everywhere.
But beyond its accolades, the musical has always been about one simple, universal truth: the relentless pursuit of a dream. And there may be no country more ready to embody that spirit than the Philippines, where artistry and resilience are woven into the cultural DNA.
As Garcia sums it up: “Although we’re building an ensemble, each dancer needs to make us remember them. This is about celebrating individuality, not hiding it.”
Curtain Up, Philippines
So—think you’ve got what it takes? Mark your calendars, warm up those voices, lace up your dance shoes, and get ready to step into one of the most iconic musicals of all time.
This isn’t just an audition. It’s a once-in-a-generation chance to be part of history.
Because when that line forms, and the spotlight hits, every performer has the chance to say: I hope I get it.
