A Unique Japan Adventure: Discovering the Tottori Sand Dunes
When you think of Japan, you might picture bustling cities, serene temples, or cherry blossoms swaying in the breeze. But did you know Japan has its very own desert-like wonder? Enter the Tottori Sand Dunes—a mesmerizing slice of nature that’s unlike anything else in the country.
Why the Tottori Sand Dunes Are Worth the Trip
Stretching along the Sea of Japan, these dunes are the largest in the country, covering about 16 kilometers in length and 2 kilometers in width. Picture golden sands meeting the deep blue sea—it’s like stepping into a completely different world.
The dunes are a playground for all kinds of adventures. Ever tried sandboarding? You can do it here! Feel like soaring above the dunes? Paragliding will give you breathtaking views. Want to embrace the desert vibe? Hop on a camel ride for a fun photo op. Or, simply kick off your shoes and wander barefoot—it’s the kind of quiet magic that stays with you long after you’ve left.
The Sand Museum: A Creative Wonder
If the dunes weren’t enough, nearby you’ll find the Sand Museum, home to mind-blowing sculptures made entirely of sand. Yes, just sand and water!
This year’s exhibition, themed around France, brought a slice of European charm to Tottori. The centerpiece? A jaw-dropping recreation of the Palace of Versailles, spanning 20 meters in length and 5.5 meters in height, crafted by master artists Leonardo Ugolini and Mac David, led by chief sculptor Katsuhiko Chaen. It’s like art meets storytelling, and every grain of sand adds to the tale.
The exhibitions change annually, so every visit is a fresh experience. And here’s the thing—they’re temporary, so don’t miss out while it’s still up!
Collecting Manhole Card in Tottori
Tottori is also a hotspot for manhole card collectors! You can grab a unique card featuring Tottori’s beautifully designed manhole cover at the Tottori City Tourism Office located a few blocks away from Tottori Station. Make sure to ask for yours—it’s a fun and free souvenir to remember your trip!
