Cebu’s K-Pop Dreams Take Center Stage at the Changwon K-Pop World Festival 2026 Press Conference
As someone who has watched Cebu’s K-pop community grow through the years, attending the press conference for the Cebu Preliminaries of the Changwon K-Pop World Festival (CKWF) 2026 felt like witnessing the start of something truly exciting.

Held ahead of the much-anticipated competition on June 27 at the Activity Center of Ayala Malls Central Bloc, the press conference gathered media partners, organizers, and members of the local K-pop community to officially kick off this year’s festival.

One of the biggest announcements was the return of HALLYU IL as a partner of the event. For over seven years, HALLYU IL has been sharing Hallyu happiness with fans through its weekly radio program on Y101, making it one of the longest-running K-pop radio shows in the Philippines. Beyond the airwaves, the organization has also become known for bringing together the local K-pop community through events such as its annual K-pop Dance Cover Contest.
Following the success of last year’s collaboration, the Korean Consulate in Cebu once again partnered with HALLYU IL to help organize this year’s preliminaries, further strengthening cultural ties between Korea and the Philippines through music, performance, and community engagement.
What struck me most during the press conference was the sheer scale of this year’s competition. The response from performers nationwide was nothing short of impressive. A total of 50 dance cover groups auditioned, with only 30 teams advancing to the finals, representing an astounding 225 dancers. Meanwhile, in the vocal category, five finalists emerged from ten auditioning acts.
Even more exciting is the diversity of participants. While Cebu remains strongly represented, contestants are also traveling from Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, Talisay, Koronadal, Iligan, Bacolod, Bohol, and even Manila to compete on one stage.
The stakes are higher than ever. Beyond cash prizes, including PHP 20,000 for the first-place winner, top-performing teams and artists will have their performance videos submitted to the official judging panel of the Changwon K-Pop World Festival in South Korea. Those who advance will earn the incredible opportunity to represent Cebu, and the Philippines, on the global stage in Changwon this October.
As a K-pop fan and content creator, hearing these opportunities discussed firsthand during the press conference made the upcoming event even more exciting. For many participants, this is more than just a competition. It’s a chance to showcase years of dedication, countless hours of practice, and a genuine love for Korean music and performance.
Adding to the excitement, HALLYU IL is incorporating elements from its signature events into this year’s preliminaries, promising an experience that is not only competitive but also fun, interactive, and community-driven. The event will be hosted by HALLYU chings Angelique Caballo and Jon Chang, who are sure to bring plenty of energy to the stage.
With Ayala Malls Central Bloc once again serving as venue partner, a long-time supporter of K-pop events in Cebu, the stage is set for what could be one of the biggest K-pop gatherings in the region this year.
After attending the press conference, one thing became clear: the Cebu preliminaries are no longer just a local competition. They have become a celebration of the passion, talent, and dedication of the Filipino K-pop community.
I, for one, cannot wait to see the performances unfold on June 27. Whether you’re a dedicated K-pop fan, a supporter of local talent, or simply curious about the phenomenon that continues to connect people across cultures, this is one event worth marking on your calendar.
