A Day Trip to Amanohashidate and Ichinomiya: Japan’s Breathtaking ‘Bridge to Heaven’
Ever dreamed of walking across the sky? Well, Amanohashidate, also known as Japan’s ‘Bridge to Heaven,’ gives you the next best thing—a breathtaking sandbar stretching across the sea, surrounded by mountains and a whole lot of serene vibes. It’s one of Japan’s top three scenic views, and after spending a day here, I totally get why. Let me take you on my little adventure through this coastal paradise!
Getting There: The Journey is Half the Fun
From Osaka, getting to Amanohashidate is a breeze! I took the JR Limited Express Kounotori from Osaka Station to Fukuchiyama, then transferred to the Kyoto Tango Railway bound for Amanohashidate. The whole trip took about 2.5 hours, but with stunning countryside views along the way, I barely noticed the time passing.
This train route is included with the JR West Kansai-Hiroshima Pass. Save more when you book with Klook and use my code – DOYZKIEKLOOK !
Note: Prior reservation from Fukuchiyama to Amanohashidate is required. Please book your tickets ahead at the JR-West Information Center.

A short walk from the station, and boom—there it was. Amanohashidate. A stretch of pine-covered land floating on the sea like something straight out of a painting.

Best Spots for That Million-Dollar View
Amanohashidate View Land
If you’re up for another scenic adventure, hop on the monorail to this viewpoint. It’s a great option for families, with fun attractions to check out while soaking in the view.

Kasamatsu Park
Take the chairlift up, and get ready for the ultimate panoramic shot. This spot is all about the relaxed, scenic vibes—perfect for capturing that classic ‘Bridge to Heaven’ view. Oh, and don’t forget to strike your best Matanozoki pose!

The Quirky Tradition: Seeing the View Upside Down
Now, here’s where things get fun. If you want to see Amanohashidate the way the locals do, you have to try the ‘Matanozoki’ pose—aka bending over and looking at the view through your legs. Sounds ridiculous, right? But trust me, it’s a game-changer! Doing this creates an optical illusion where the sandbar looks like it’s floating in the sky. Mind. Blown.

Must-Visit Temples: A Spiritual Touch to Your Trip
Chion-ji Temple
Located near the southern end of Amanohashidate, Chion-ji Temple is dedicated to Monju Bosatsu, the Buddhist deity of wisdom. It’s famous for its large wooden gate and beautiful temple grounds. Don’t forget to pick up a lucky charm—especially the wisdom fortunes, which make for a unique souvenir!

Nariaiji Temple
If you’re up for a bit of a hike (or a scenic drive), Nariaiji Temple is a must. Nestled in the mountains, this temple offers a breathtaking view of Amanohashidate from above. The five-story pagoda and tranquil atmosphere make it a perfect spot for a peaceful break from sightseeing.

A Scenic Boat Ride to Ichinomiya
For a different perspective of Amanohashidate, I hopped on a boat from Amanohashidate to Ichinomiya. It was a relaxing ride with stunning coastal views—and a bit of unexpected fun! Gulls and black kites followed the boat, eagerly eyeing passengers with snacks. You can actually buy bird feed at the docks on both sides, turning the ride into an interactive wildlife experience. Feeding them while they swoop down is a highlight you won’t want to miss!

Amanohashidate is like stepping into a different world—peaceful, beautiful, and straight-up magical. Whether you’re biking across the sandbar, soaking in the view from above, or stuffing your face with fresh seafood, this place is a must-visit.
So, what do you think? Are you adding Amanohashidate to your Japan bucket list? Because trust me, it’s one of those places you have to see to believe!
