All About Ube: Bohol celebrates the 24th Ubi Festival

Last 18-20 December 2024, Bohol celebrated the biggest gathering of ube growers in the region. And yes, it’s all about the yam! The 24th Ubi Festival in Tagbilaran City, and it was nothing short of amazing. From ube-packed treats to vibrant cultural showcases, this festival is a true purple paradise.

What’s the Buzz About Ubi?
Did you know that Bohol is recognized as the largest ubi producer in the Philippines? In Bohol, ubi (or ube, as others call it) is more than just a root crop; it’s a symbol of community, culture, and pride. This delicious and versatile yam has been a staple for generations, providing not just sustenance but also joy. The saying, “Walay kinampay, walay kalipay” (“Without kinampay, there is no joy”), says it all! And at the heart of the festival is the famous Kinampay, Bohol’s pride and joy, known for its unique sweetness and aroma.

We were able to shop for the best ube crops and products, plus artisan products, at the Ube Exhibits and Trade Fairs. Picture stalls brimming with different varieties of ube, from the iconic Kinampay to the rare and nutty Iniling. Plus, tables full of delicious goodies like ube halaya, ube ice cream, ube bread, and UBE-licious drinks!

Bohol’s ube isn’t just delicious; it’s diverse! There’s different varieties but Kinampay is the superstar of Bohol’s ube scene. Sweet, aromatic, and perfect for making the iconic ube halaya.
